Proposal for 2021Hsinchu Lantern Festival
Collaboration with Yushan Men, Cullen Fu, Sammy Hasan

Type : Outdoor Installation
As we all have adapted to the new norms demanded of the 2020 global pandemic, the role of the living room in our lives has shifted. What was before only open to close friends and family, has been put on display to a much larger pool of people as working from home has become ubiquitous. Simultaneously, much of our living rooms have lost their function and simply become backdrops for video communication.
As our living rooms are cropped against the frame of a video call, the individual has the ability to design their backdrop for which they will be presenting themselves. This hardly spatial, primarily frontal background acts as a stage for the day to day performance of our new way of living. We carefully curate the space behind us, just as we choose our clothes. These backgrounds represent who we are and how we live: the intellect with their bookshelf, the artist with their painting, the musician with their instruments.
The result is a virtual collage of tiled living rooms, a collection of stages scattered across our screens. Livingroom Meeting is the physical manifestation of this new-normal virtual space. It hopes to not only represent our lives through various stage sets, but also reintroduce the function of various living room activities that have become dormant over the last few months. The project is meant to be thought of as a collective space comprised of many different styles to represent the uniqueness of each of our living spaces, each having its own character and function. Together the stages come together as a landscape for inhabitants to move about, guided by unique accents of lighting and activities at each scene.
The decentralized arrangement of various objects produces a series of processions across the main path along the canal, allowing the community to filter through this zone moving from scene to scene.
As our living rooms have become places of work and isolation, Livingroom Meeting will reintroduce the Living Room in an environment where it can again become a place to share in new experiences in a time when so few are being made. For the 2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Hsinchu it is our dream to provide a landscape for the community to be together-apart, create new memories, and be in the presence of new faces across the room. Designing for resilience will be the defining ethos of our time, Livingroom Meeting will capture this zeitgeist through its distinct physical and social qualities.
